Workshop Description

Join us for an all-inclusive week of oil painting in the Tuscan countryside with David Shevlino. This workshop will focus on painting the figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to the subject. After a painting demonstration from David, the class will work from the life model. This workshop will be divided between working on the figure and the portrait. Emphasis will be on simplifying and interpreting the figure and head as a series of basic shapes and planes, described by light and shadow. David will discuss many useful topics during the week, such as value, color, paint application, and basic proportions of the head and figure. This class will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely - by learning to simplify what we see, we become better able to paint our subjects with greater clarity and directness.

During this all-inclusive art retreat, meals will be home-cooked and eaten together in our large dining room or outside when the weather is nice. In the evenings particiapants will have free use of the grounds to explore, including the swimming pool, woodland, lake and olive groves. There is also a volleyball net, and a games rooom with table tennis and table football. During the week we will host some evening entertanment which everyone is welcome to join, such as a wine tour, cooking class, and picnic in the vineyards.

David Shevlino

David Shevlino was born in Jersey City, NJ in 1962. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the University of Pennsylvania, he also studied at the Art Students' League in New York. David's early work was very traditional and classically inspired.  However, after many years of experimenting, Shevlino began exploring a looser paint application which stradles the line between representational painting and abstraction. His paintings are characterized by broad brushstrokes, a sensuous application of paint and an obvious feel for tonal harmonies. Shevlino has exhibited work nationally in both solo and group exhibits over the past two decades and currently lives in NC.
